Risk Factors

Risk factors to increase the likelihood of a UTI can be non-preventable or preventable.  Non-preventable factors include female gender, family history of recurrent UTI, prior UTI, incontinence, and indwelling catheters.  Potentially preventable factors include vaginal intercourse in the last two weeks, use of contraception with spermicide, a new sexual partner in the previous year, and recent antibiotic use.4,5
