Exclusion Criteria

Immediately refer the patient to a provider if any of the following are present:

  • No prior diagnosis of a UTI
  • Prior multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogen/MDR risk factors
  • History of more than 3 UTI’s per year
  • Gross hematuria
  • Indwelling catheter
  • Urinary obstruction
  • Male gender
  • Age >/= 65
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Renal insufficiency
  • Immunosuppression
  • Urolithiasis/Underlying urological abnormality
  • Recent renal surgery
  • Voiding dysfunction
  • Ureteral valves
  • Vesicoureteral reflux (a condition where urine flows from the bladder back up the ureters towards the kidneys)
  • Pregnancy
  • Nosocomial infection (antibiotic therapy in last 30 days, hospital stay in the previous 30 days)
  • Severe CVA tenderness
  • Signs of systemic infection
    • Temp > 103⁰ F
    • RR > 25 breaths/minute
    • Pulse > 110 beats/minute
    • SP02 < 90%
    • Systolic BP < 100 mmHg
