Background/Epidemiology

Common and chronic immunoglobulin E-mediated respiratory illness can affect the quality of life and productivity. AR affects 20% of the population of all ages. The risk is greater in people who have asthma, eczema (the allergic triad), or family history of either condition. Typically symptoms are more severe in childhood, however, the severity can vary throughout a person’s life. This disease occurs after exposure to indoor or outdoor allergens (examples include dust mites, animal dander, molds, and pollen). This can exacerbate other conditions such as asthma. AR is highly suggestive if the patient has >2 of the following symptoms for more than 1 hour on most days with variable duration (most common in high pollen/mold seasons)

Symptoms include:

  • Rhinorrhea
  • Sneezing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Obstruction
  • Pruritus
  • Conjunctivitis (Non-purulent)
