Advantages and Disadvantages of nebulizers by type

Table 2 – Nebulizer Comparison

Nebulizer

Advantages

Disadvantages

Jet

  • Coordination between inhalation and exhalation is not required.
  • Can administer high doses.
  • Low cost
  • Most popular type of nebulizer.
  • Longer administration time
  • Risk of contamination
  • Device preparation time prior to use
  • Not all medications available for use
  • More dead volume which decreases efficiency of drug delivery.
  • Needs a compressor

Mesh

  • Coordination between inhalation and exhalation not required
  • Can administer high doses
  • Quiet
  • Quicker delivery of drug compared to Jet nebulizer
  • Portability
  • Expense
  • Risk of contamination
  • Longer device preparation time prior to use
  • Must clean the device after each use
  • Mesh needs to be replaced after 3-12 months
  • Not all medications available for use

Ultrasonic

  • Coordination between inhalation and exhalation not required
  • Can administer high doses
  • Low dead volume thus increasing efficiency of delivery
  • Quiet
  • Drug is not lost during exhalation
  • Quicker drug delivery than jet nebulizer (slower than Mesh)
  • Expense.
  • Higher rate of device malfunction
  • Risk of contamination
  • Device preparation time prior to use
  • High-density solutions may cause bronchospasm and increased airway resistance
  • Unable to use medications in suspension vehicle
